Learn and Grow Together in Christ

Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Year 6 are taught by Miss Strange, Miss Stalton and Miss Rohman. Mrs Lewis works in year 6 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and Mrs Robinson works with us on Wednesday afternoons. In the morning, we complete our English and Maths learning, and we study wider curriculum subjects in the afternoon, such as History, Geography, Music, Spanish and Art. We do P.E. on a Monday and a Thursday, in which we play a variety of sports and improve our skills. In English, we use high quality texts to support our learning, whilst we work on narratives, non-fiction texts and Shakespearean plays. Our Maths lessons focus on a range of skills, which we then apply to a variety of situations. We learn about World War II and The Mayan Civilisation in History, and in Geography we look at earthquakes and volcanoes, and where our energy comes from.

Each member of the class choses a book from the Accelerated Reader scheme. The expectation is for them to read at home daily and to complete their reading diaries as they do so. This reading may be independent, or they may read to someone at home. They should bring their book and their diary into school every day, and they will read to an adult in school regularly. The children are asked to change their books once they have completed an Accelerated Reader quiz, which tests their knowledge and understanding of the text they have read.

In addition to reading at home, the children should ensure they are able to rapidly recall their times tables and associated division facts up to 10 x 10. To improve on this, they can use their login to Times Tables Rockstars, practise using pen and paper, or work with someone at home to recall the facts verbally. The children also have access to the Prodigy Maths website, which will help them with other areas of mathematics. They are also asked to practise spellings using their Spelling Shed account, and their handwriting using Letterjoin. Logins are sent home for these, but if at anytime you require a reminder, please contact one of the year 6 team or the school office.

Some members of Year 6 are members of Young Citizens, Reading Ambassadors, Wellbeing Buddies, or are given other responsibilities in school. The children are also  ‘gardeners’ to their seeds in Reception. They meet with their seeds on a regular basis to socialise and share learning.
