Learn and Grow Together in Christ

Year 1

British Science Week 2024

The year 1 children had a great Science week! They met some animals from Little Zoo and learnt all about them. The children also took part in some fun, interesting and very messy Science investigations to celebrate.

Autumn 2023

Hello and welcome to year 1!

In year 1, we are supported daily by the class TA, Mrs Robinson. We are also supported in class by Mrs Brown, Miss Eckersley and Miss Heyes. Mrs Robinson will cover PPA every other Tuesday.

Reading

Phonics and reading are very important in KS1 to develop a strong foundation for learning. Please try and read with your child daily (even if it is a couple of pages) and sign their reading record. Reading books will be changed at least twice a week. Please bring in your child's reading book when it needs changing. Reading at home is very beneficial for children and listening to an adult read to them supports their learning.

Homework

There is no weekly set homework in year 1, but I will send home activities to support the children’s learning. These may be story maps for them to practise, phonics sounds, topic activities or some spellings.

In year 1, phonics is very important to help children to read. There are some fun activities on www.phonicsplay.com and www.ictgames.com where the children can practice reading and spellings at home.

Clothing

Please remember to label ALL of your child’s clothes with their names; this can be done on the clothing labels with a permanent marker pen. We encourage the children to take responsibility for their belongings and I’m sure that you can appreciate that it is very difficult to identify children’s clothing if it is not named.

P.E

Our P.E sessions are on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. Please make sure children wear school PE kit to school on these days including their school jumper. They will need to have pumps in school if we cannot go outside for PE.

I am looking forward to meeting you all, but in the meantime, if you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
