Intent

At St Mary’s RC Primary School, we value Art and Design as an essential and important part of the broad and balanced curriculum. Our intent is to ensure all pupils are given the opportunity to explore and produce a variety of artwork. Children are given the opportunity to explore their ideas and record their experiences, as well as exploring the work of others and evaluate different creative ideas. Art skills are revisited and built upon each year in order to allow pupils to become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting, collage, printing and digital art. Children will develop their interest and curiosity about art and design through a series of lessons that are skill and knowledge based. Knowledge of famous artists, architects and designers will be taught and influence some of the work they are creating.

Art and design curriculum aims:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
